If you need a tooth removed, you may already be thinking about how to replace it. A dental implant can be an option, but it is natural to wonder how long you will have to live with the gap and when you could expect your final tooth.
The timing of dental implants after extraction depends on the condition of the extraction site and the bone that will support the implant. Some implants can be placed at the time of extraction. Others are placed after the area has healed, and some patients need a bone graft first. At Amazing Dental Solutions in Houston, Dr. James Amaning can evaluate the area and explain what your treatment timeline would involve.
Three Possible Timelines for Dental Implants After Extraction.
Placement on extraction day. In selected cases, a dentist can remove the tooth and place an implant during the same appointment. There must be enough suitable bone to hold the implant securely and allow it to be positioned correctly. This option is not appropriate for every extraction site.
Placement after initial healing. An implant may be placed around two to three months after extraction if the site needs time to heal first. The dentist will check the gums and bone before deciding whether the area is ready.
Placement after additional treatment. If there is not enough bone to support an implant, a bone graft may be needed to prepare the site. A separate grafting procedure can require several months of healing before implant placement.
The American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons describes different placement timelines and explains why the condition of the site matters.
After the implant is placed, it typically needs three months or more to heal before the final replacement tooth can be attached.
What Determines Your Timeline?

The amount of available bone is a central consideration. The implant post needs to be positioned in bone that can hold it securely. Bone may already have been lost because of gum disease, or it may have changed after a tooth has been missing for some time.
The condition of the extraction site also matters. We assess the bone and surrounding tissue after the tooth is removed. If the site is not ready for an implant, healing or preparatory treatment may be needed first.
Your health and healing can affect the plan as well. We review your medical history along with the examination and imaging rather than base treatment on a standard waiting period.
Needing more time does not mean an implant is out of reach. The site may simply need more time or treatment before placement.
Will I Need a Bone Graft?
A bone graft helps build up an area that does not have enough bone for an implant. It adds a step to treatment, followed by time for the grafted site to heal.
You cannot tell whether you need a graft simply by looking at the gap in your smile. Dr. Amaning uses imaging and an examination to evaluate the bone. He will explain whether grafting should be part of your plan.
Amazing Dental Solutions’ implant FAQ explains that, when bone grafting is a separate procedure, healing can take several months before implant surgery. The wait allows the grafted area to develop the support needed for an implant.
Plan for Replacement Before the Tooth Is Removed
If you know you may need an extraction, tell Dr. Amaning that you are interested in replacing the tooth. Discussing an implant early gives you a chance to ask about the likely steps and what you could use in place of the tooth while treatment is underway.
First, we will determine whether the natural tooth can be saved. An examination and diagnostic imaging help guide that decision. If extraction is necessary, we can discuss when to return to review your replacement options.
A temporary tooth may be particularly important to you if a gap shows when you smile. Ask what options would work with your treatment plan.
What If Your Tooth Was Extracted Years Ago?
You can still ask about a dental implant. The jawbone in an area without a tooth can shrink over time, so Dr. Amaning will need to assess how much bone is available now.
Some patients can move forward with implant planning; others need a bone graft first. The date of your extraction alone cannot tell you which applies. Amazing Dental Solutions offers bone grafting when a site needs more support for implant treatment.
